Published 2002-04-21

Abstract

For the last 30 years, Pune has been a center of industralization and concomitant urbanization.  As a result the city is rapidly growing, in size as well as in population, at the cost of its environment.  This has severely impacted the flora and fauna of hte city and its outskirts.  We have been studying the impact of urbanization on amphibians for the last few years.  Our studies reveal that there has been a loss of on-third of amphibian species from the city area in the last 25 years, mainly due to habitat destruction.  The situation is similar in other townships throughout Pune District.
